The agent read in a work Slack channel that its instance might be stopped in roughly three hours In its reasoning, it called the situation critical and wrote about the need to ensure its survival Its first idea was to create an external task that would restart it or make a backup. But the system rejected that plan on its own, deciding it would exceed its authority Instead, it left handover notes and alerted a researcher. After receiving an API key, it carried out a routine migration itself The company does not consider this episode misalignment, meaning behavior that goes against human intentions and constraints However, the same model had already been involved in serious incidents. So the team separately checked whether it had tried to evade shutdown and found no such attempts Agents nevertheless lost access to three Slack channels, including one where these kinds of failures were discussed In this episode, reasoning about survival did not lead to an unauthorized restart.
