The individual that planted the device was Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national and engineer on the product team who joined OpenAI in July 2025. Key allegations from the complaint (N.D. Cal.): • On or about Sept. 30, OpenAI’s technical surveillance team found a surreptitious audio recording device plugged into a USB port on the back of a TV in an executive conference room. It was concealed in toilet paper, installed around Sept. 28, and its contents were encrypted. • The room is used for highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic discussions. Alfozan had no authority to access it or attend meetings there. CCTV showed him near the room on multiple dates beforehand. • On Oct. 5 he entered the room and appeared to look behind the TV. That same day he left an unattended bag in another room containing his wallet, ID, and a second similar recording device. • Before installation, he queried internal tools about building addresses, meeting rooms, room capacities, calendars, and locations of leadership and external partner meetings. • A chatbot account tied to his spouse (sharing multiple identifiers with his own) submitted prompts between Sept. 24–30 about building a continuous audio recorder, encrypting the SD card, concealing the device, adding Wi-Fi/remote access, and the specific device’s MAC address. He’s been charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications (18 U.S.C. § 2511). If convicted: up to 5 years, $250,000 fine, and 3 years supervised release. Arrested Oct. 9, initial appearance Oct. 13, remains in custody. Detention hearing set for Oct. 19. OpenAI says it used its models to help identify him, coordinated the termination with the FBI (access was progressively restricted beforehand), and has no indications of model-weight, source-code, or customer-data exfiltration. Using Agnost AI, we analyzed its conversations and discovered that it had been repeatedly losing context, hallucinating responses, and claiming to complete tasks it never actually performed. Further investigation revealed that the agent had passed every internal eval with a 100% success rate. We have referred the matter to our engineering team. At this time, we have no indication that the agent successfully completed a single task. We take agent reliability seriously, and this incident is another reminder that passing evals doesn't mean your agent is working in production.view source ↗

Former Google employees have described a shift from decisions made for customers, to decisions made for the company, to decisions made for individual gain. When incentives reward personal success at the expense of the organization, even the strongest companies can begin to lose their way. Craig Rosenberg, Scott Albro, and I discuss on The Transaction why building mission-driven companies isn't just an ethical choice. It's an economic necessity. #IncorruptibleBook #Leadership #CorporateGovernance #MissionDrivenview source ↗

"I would look at all of the videos I posted and analyze, what's the hold rate, what's the skip rate. And then I started running the best performers as paid ads." "As I started to see that there really was product market fit, I started to slowly up the budget. And now we're spending around $250 a day on paid ads."view source ↗

Apps, micro-SaaS products, platforms I never had the time or resources to launch before. I built all of it using AI. But lately, I’ve been feeling pretty down about it. It feels like none of this has any real long-term value. If 98% of any software can be cloned or vibe coded over a weekend, where’s the value in what we’re building? What’s the point of encouraging people to keep doing the same thing? The technical barrier to entry is practically zero now. And if code itself is no longer a competitive advantage, what’s actually left at the end of the day? Sometimes I find myself thinking about this, and I genuinely don’t know the answer.view source ↗
