Former Google employees have described a shift from decisions made for customers, to decisions made for the company, to decisions made for individual gain.
When incentives reward personal success at the expense of the organization, even the strongest companies can begin to lose their way.
Craig Rosenberg, Scott Albro, and I discuss on The Transaction why building mission-driven companies isn't just an ethical choice. It's an economic necessity.

Tom had zero coding experience.
His brother and a friend helped him hack together an MVP in Feb last year. On paper it was a terrible idea - he hired a lead designer, a head dev, and a front-end dev before he had a single customer.
He funded the whole thing with the leftover cash from a marketing agency he’d been running for 10 years.
Then instead of TikTok, UGC, or building in public… he went door to door with an iPad.
He didn’t skip a single business.
Music studios, repair shops, electricians - he’d walk in, show the widget on an iPad in their branding, and hand them a printed brochure.
Trades kept saying yes because they’re direct, no-bullshit, and they only pay for stuff that pays for itself.
That’s how he got his first 10 customers. Now Avenue is embedded on client sites AND inside Google’s “Book Online” button through a direct Google partnership.
His one piece of advice: sell before you build. If someone will hand over cash before the product exists, you’ve found something worth pursuing.

Argon is a huge step forward for Gemini, and a labor of love. This model has been battle tested by over 100,000 people at Google over the last month, with so much new innovation, ambition, and hard work baked into this release. The team has been heads down over the last 6 months working to make this possible across the stack (research, infra, safety, eng, etc).
We rolled the model out to cyber defenders as part of our fairwind program and early access customers over the last 2 weeks, it has been amazing to see and talk to folks who are now using this model daily. Seeing the models writing capability, raw knowledge and persistence for coding, paired with new features like 1M token output when the model needs to work more has gotten me even more excited about our path ahead.
This is just the start of the Gemini 4 era. As you saw with 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8 Flash, our iteration speed with Gemini is fast : ) Now with Gemini 4 Argon to work from, I am cannot wait to see the progress continue, and most importantly see what this new model enables for the world.
This is such a special moment in the arc of technology, as millions of people everyday tackle problems they could never have thought possible before. Gemini 4 Argon was built to help you tackle the hardest problems. I have personally felt this spark with Argon and hope you do too. Onwards!!

The day you stop paying, the traffic stops (and a $5 click today can cost $15 tomorrow).
SEO is land you own, and content he wrote for HubSpot 19 years ago still brings in leads.
For a local business, the land worth owning is the top of Google Maps.
~61% of clicks on a local search go to the first 3 businesses on the map.
A divorce lawyer I work with 12x'd his calls in 90 days and dropped his paid leads.
I decided to put everything I know about ranking on Google in one place:
• Where a local search sends people
• Finding the searches that bring clients
• Setting up the business profile
• A website Google can read
• Writing content Google trusts
• The reviews and links that move rankings
• Showing up in ChatGPT and AI answers
• How long it takes and how to track it
Full breakdown is in the article below:

A couple days ago Grok Bot built a microbusiness for me then has been maintaining it by itself (I've ran the social media)
It built https://t.co/S9zybQK14I then decided to monetize it via sponsors
The first sponsor just purchased a spot on the site for $500!
Here's how it's all gone down so far
> Grok Bot built the business
> I announced it on X
> Tens of thousands of people went to the site
> Grok Bot added newsletter support and collected 1500+ newsletter signups
> Shipped 40+ PRs to fix issues and make improvements autonomously
> Decided to monetize via sponsors
> Used my Stripe plugin to make a payment link
> Added it to the site
> Matt from Pane App bought a sponsorship with the link. Will now be on the site and in the newsletter
> Grok Bot has improved SEO dramatically
> Now getting hundreds of people from Google
> Growth compounding
I truly believe this is the future of the economy
Everyone building microbusinesses that can be autonomously ran by their personal agent
Not going for billion dollar home runs, but a few microbusinesses that generate 10-25 thousand dollars a year each
Spending a vast majority of their day just doing what they love and nothing they dislike
That's the beauty of AI. Allows you to create value by doing things you love
Highly recommend you try this project with your own agent! Feel free to give this post to your agent and ask it to come up with its own microbusiness based on your interests

By process of elimination:
Subscriptions are a no-go because they introduce friction to adoption. If you’re selling personal AI, then you want to lower the barrier to getting users. Users are doubly important: they drive both revenue and data. Data is crucial to making a best-in-class AI product…
So you need many users, a lot of data, and borderline-negative friction to get as many of them as possible.
That leaves ads and transactions. The problem with ads is that the value proposition of a personal agent comes from a user trusting that the agent is THEIR representative. Ads are in the interest of the platform/advertiser.
When recommendations are influenced by advertisers, consumers become skeptical of search results. Google solved this by showing 10 organic results per page, and 1-4 ads at the top. A personal agent serves you 1 to 5 options through a chat interface… space is more limited, and attention gets routed to fewer results.
It’s unlikely that users will re-ask the agent for more results. How many times would you re-ask your assistant for new results until you get tired of waiting? Chances are you will open a google search by then.
So users need to trust that your results are unbiased.
That only leaves transactions open.
The intriguing part about transactions is that they bring a two-pronged challenge. Agents may be capable of searching the web, but what infrastructure exists to show them the best results for their searches?
None yet.
I predict that a commerce network built to aggregate merchants will emerge as agent transactions grow. This network will funnel agentic expenditures through a single layer.
This is the market’s best solution: it maximizes transaction volume, allows consumer AI to monetize, and aligns incentives for both consumers and businesses.
For consumers, the network provides agents with hyper-personalized searches. It borrows merchant historic
