And the reason why goes back to what UGC stands for:
User.

It's word of mouth with a camera pointed at it. The strongest form of marketing that has ever existed.
Facebook and Uber became #1 without ever needing a billboard to explain themselves. People told other people, and the product did the rest.
That's all good UGC is. Somebody talking about your app because they mean it.
The second you hand a creator a script telling them how to speak, what kind of energy to bring and which 12 value props they have to mention, you've turned word of mouth into a bad ad.
And people can tell it's an ad in milliseconds, so they scroll.
So let's look at what's winning instead.
A creator for Emma, a language app, opens on her own face, crying, mascara running down her cheeks. The text on the video says: "Why English is so hard".
Then she picks up her phone and the AI tutor tells her: "It's 'bologna,' but we say it like 'baloney.'"
Frame 1 is a mess. That's exactly WHY it works.
People are drowning in MrBeast-style edits and polished dopamine slop. What they crave is a real person, a real feeling and an honest finding.
The same thing happens in the comments when you let it.
We saw it with SpoilMe, an invite-only app we run UGC for.
Someone asked "Im scared to put my credit card info on there is it safe?". 10 replies came back, real users talking each other into the app.
Clipping, AI avatars and paid ads all live on the outside of that conversation, trying to buy their way in.
This is the whole brief we give our creators:
- The hook, word for word, as it appears on screen
- The second the product shows up
- What the creator must NEVER say
What's not in there:
- Scripts
- Tone direction
- "Say it with more energy"
- Your brand's 12 value props
If your brief is longer than this, it's a script.
When you pair this level of rawness with an app that makes som

Tom had zero coding experience.
His brother and a friend helped him hack together an MVP in Feb last year. On paper it was a terrible idea - he hired a lead designer, a head dev, and a front-end dev before he had a single customer.
He funded the whole thing with the leftover cash from a marketing agency he’d been running for 10 years.
Then instead of TikTok, UGC, or building in public… he went door to door with an iPad.
He didn’t skip a single business.
Music studios, repair shops, electricians - he’d walk in, show the widget on an iPad in their branding, and hand them a printed brochure.
Trades kept saying yes because they’re direct, no-bullshit, and they only pay for stuff that pays for itself.
That’s how he got his first 10 customers. Now Avenue is embedded on client sites AND inside Google’s “Book Online” button through a direct Google partnership.
His one piece of advice: sell before you build. If someone will hand over cash before the product exists, you’ve found something worth pursuing.

i broke the playbook down into 12 rules:
1. build the company brain before you build agents. customer fit, offers, voice, founder opinions + failed campaigns should live in files every agent can read.
2. start agents read-only. let them learn from HubSpot, Stripe, Slack, Gong + analytics before they earn permission to change anything.
3. give every campaign an ID and carry it through ads, emails, UTMs, CRM deals + revenue so you know which marketing brought customers who actually paid and stayed.
4. make customer language your first agent. feed it 20-50 sales calls and pull the exact phrases buyers use to describe their problems, then rerun it every week.
5. build a buying-trigger agent around moments that create demand: funding, hiring, new locations, product launches, expansion + other changes that suddenly make your product relevant.
6. only write outbound when you can clearly explain why NOW: “this event creates this problem, and our product solves it in this specific way.” if that sentence is weak, skip the account.
7. build search around questions people ask right before they buy. combine Search Console, sales calls + what ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity recommend when buyers ask about your category.
8. make your creative agent test different REASONS to buy, not 50 tiny variations of one ad. pain point, customer story, worked example, demo, comparison, founder take, etc.
9. name every experiment by what it’s testing. “dinner-angle_ugc_v2” creates a reusable lesson when it wins. “video_final_7” tells you nothing.
10. build a closed-lost agent that rereads every lost deal, records the real reason + reopen condition, then brings the account back when that condition changes.
11. make every performance report end with a decision: KEEP, KILL, CHANGE, or TEST. wire it through to revenue, retention + churn so cheap customers w

TikTok Ads: Legendary, takes some time to figure out and your app needs to have good user economics but once you find winning creatives it's amazing. Also: TIKTOK ADS MCP
Meta Ads: Same, I prefer TikTok but it depends on your niche
Canvas UGC: The only form of UGC that's reliable. Posting on new accounts makes it both in-line with the nature of UGC as well as making it accessible to creators. Result? you pay little. It requires good understanding of UGC, good management skills, and good payment terms. Also, outreach can be tough sometimes
TikTok Farm: Usually with slideshows, which are only effective on TikTok. It does require many phones obviously, and good software to manage them. For software I recommend Ghost Farm by @wbyanme (not sponsored)
Organic slideshows: Highest ROI, organic way to post content for free. My go-to for testing the waters for a new app. Only on TikTok, the algorithm loves slideshows for some reason. Instagram not at all.
Reddit: Somewhat niche but works if you have a fitting audience. You can also artificially acquire upvotes, and AI indexes reddit too so win-win. Creates a lasting reputation for your app
X: You can go mega viral like with @nestymee if you have something good to show
Organic UGC: Good but you need to have acting skills and a good phone, and you need to understand the principles of UGC very well (appear professionally unprofessional)
Regular UGC: Inherently inferior to Canvas UGC. Why would you buy 1 video for $100? Only use case is if you need a quick video for a launch or website
ASO: Not a lifechanger but you need to have this done properly since it amplifies all your other marketing channels when people visit your app store page
Clipping (slideshows): Only works if your app has something visual to sell. Middle-man parties usually take a large chunk of revenue like 20%. Also suffers from some botting scams
YouTube: Can work, especially with automation like the legen

Then a creator asks for $100, with no guaranteed ROI, and they turn into Charlie Munger and want proof of return before they spend a cent.
This exact mindset is the #1 campaign killer in UGC, and the picture below explains it better than I ever will:
The guy on top turns around one swing away from the diamonds.
The guy underneath keeps digging.
This is UGC in a nutshell.
That mindset shows up as a founder who stops EVERYTHING the second CPMs tick up, or as a founder who gives the whole channel 30 days to prove itself.
You wouldn't run your life like that.
Nobody sane dumps his girlfriend after a month because she did one small thing that annoyed him.
Quitting the gym after 4 weeks because your hamstrings are sore and you somehow aren't CBUM yet sounds insane when you say it out loud.
And walking out of boxing after your first spar because your partner caught you clean and left a small cut? That guy will never become a fighter.
Here's why you have to give UGC time.
Across our programs, 96% of videos land under 10K views. Around 0.3% break 500K, and that 0.3% drives about 65% of ALL views.
So you need a lot of videos. If you have 10 creators each posting twice a day, that's about 600 videos a month.
Nobody predicts which video lands in the 0.3%. The best thing you can do is give your creators enough shots to find it.
Expect the first month of running UGC to look average. You're paying to find out what works, and the results come after.
Here's what to look at in your first month instead of CPM:
- Which of your formats beats the others on saves and shares
- Which creators beat their own median views
- Which comments keep showing up (those become next month's hooks)
- Which hook got even one outlier, because that's the one you clone
Then stick to these 3 rules:
1. Never kill the channel off one bad week
2. Cut formats and creators on day 14 to 21, keep the program
3. Build mon

It works because of a feeling the viewer isn't supposed to have: that they just stumbled onto a secret.
A creator with 160 followers ran it and got 158K views organically. No ads or boosts.
Here's how to build a hook like this one, piece by piece, for your own app.
Piece 1: the face.
A girl who looks like your customer, face into the camera, with an exaggerated expression. Shock, disgust, guilt, disbelief. Frame 1 has to look like something happened 1 second ago.
Piece 2: the question.
The text hook is a question that triggers an emotion. Anger and disgust both get people watching. Surprise works even better.
But the one that won here was a fourth feeling: that she found something she SHOULDN'T be sharing.
Nothing makes people more curious than a secret. The viewer has to know what she's hiding.
Piece 3: who's holding the phone.
The face has to be your exact customer, or someone your customer admires.
The whole purpose of UGC is showing the product in someone's hands. If those hands belong to your customer, your customer sees herself in them and wants to try it.
Piece 4: the sound.
A trending jingle plays under it. When a sound is trending, TikTok pushes more videos that use it.
Here are templates for each emotion. Swap in your app:
Anger: "why did nobody tell me about [app] before I spent $[X] on [old solution]??"
Disgust: "wait… people are still [painful old habit] when [app] exists??"*
Surprise: "hold on, this app does WHAT??"*
Guilty secret: "am I allowed to post this or is this gatekeeping??"
Before a creator films any of these, do one quick check.
Read the hook text on its own. If it doesn't make you need to see the next 3 seconds, rewrite it. It's much cheaper to fix a line than a video.
So yeah, the face gets people to stop scrolling, and the question gets them to keep watching.
Get both right and 160 followers is plenty.
If you run a consumer app and want hooks li
